Freaky Thursday morning - and so far there are no reports of injuries. The explosion happened around 8:12 am. A 2 block radius was evacuated as they haven't been able to turn off the gas. Windows all along Main Street were broken - several blocks away even- Mercury is located about 4 blocks from Boodles - the well known restaurant which is now gone as well as an art gallery and bar. I am sure more businesses are destroyed as well. My co-worker saw the explosion and the building being blown up in the air 2-3 times the height of the actual building before tumbling into the mess as show in the pictures above. My good friend Carolyn lives a 1/2 a block away on the opposite side of the street and she probably won't be able to home until tomorrow. We were able to see that her windows were broken indeed. They are currently trying to contain the fire from spreading to other downtown businesses. So sad - we are all just happy that no one has been reported hurt - which is actually very surprising considering the location, foot and vehicle traffic along Main....maybe the serious snow delayed people from getting to work on time!!
